Epic Picnic
European Heritage Days
In collaboration with KOSMOS
Parc Gustave Leonard Hentsch, Genève
2024
Questioning the contours of the notion of collective heritage, with students in the Interior Architecture Master’s programme, we proposed to host a large neighbourhood picnic in front of their school. For one day, we highlighted the social practices and rituals of the city of Geneva, rather than its built architectural objects that are not easily accessible. Through the construction of 4 pavilions, the aim was to activate practices linked to specific places in the city, in the heart of Hentsch Park. A large tablecloth, mimicking Plainpalais, welcomes lunchtime and evening passers-by for a sunny picnic. The Jet d’Eau becomes horizontal, forming a fountain for users of all sizes. The Mont Blanc bridge lends its series of flags, this time illustrating Geneva’s community centres, and paves the way for a game of pétanque. An agricultural greenhouse, part of the school’s scenography, on the roof of the Edna building by architect Georges Addor, which was closed for the Heritage Days, raises questions about the accessibility of these sites to the general public.
